Lilya Bahiri is a Ph.D. student and Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant at the University of North Dakota (UND), College of Engineering & Mines. She holds a dual master’s degree, a Master in Energy Engineering (2025) from UND and a Master in Petroleum Refining from the National Institute of Hydrocarbons and Chemistry (INHC), University of Boumerdes, Algeria and also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Process Engineering from the same institution.

Before joining UND, Lilya gained industrial experience through internships with SONATRACH, Algeria’s national oil company, and worked as a Quality Control Engineer at Osmose Groupe.

At UND, her research focuses on the optimization of rare earth element (REE) recovery from lignite coal, emphasizing improved efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability. She also contributes to the academic community as the Media and Communications Officer for the AEE Student Chapter.
